Established in 1995, this prize honors the Beveridge family’s longstanding commitment to the AHA and K-12 teaching. Friends and family members endowed this award to recognize excellence and innovation in elementary, middle school, and secondary history teaching, including career contributions and specific initiatives. Don’t you love getting letters? Everyone does, but nobody’s writing anymore. Letter writing is an art that may soon be lost to texting and e-mail.
Introduce young readers and writers to one of the most personal and meaningful ways to communicate with Letters from the White House. This national creative writing contest encourages students in grades PreK through 12 to explore the useful arts of letter writing and journaling, take a look at the history of our country, and tap into their own creativity when they imagine and write about themselves as having a role in a past, present or future White House.

In conjunction with the “African American Trailblazers in Virginia History” program, the Library of Virginia is co-sponsoring the “African American Trailblazers Student Essay Contest.” Civil rights attorney and activist Oliver Hill once said: “Our Declaration of Independence says we are all created with rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. I agree with the life and the liberty. The pursuit of happiness ought to include the right to be taught and trained, to be able to do something constructive, to move toward a civilized society.” Based on this statement, contestants are asked to respond to the question, “What does the pursuit of happiness mean to you?” The contest is open to any Virginia student in grades 3–8. The New America Foundation is looking to draw attention to the needs of children and for the next generation of policy ideas to help kids. We are inviting all public and private high school seniors in the United States to voice your opinions by writing and submitting an essay that answers the question, “You have just been elected the President of the United States. What is the most important thing you will do to improve the lives of America’s children?”
This contest provides a unique opportunity for students to articulate their hopes for improving children’s lives. It is your turn to tell your parents, teachers, and Washington policymakers what you think America’s priorities should be.
