Sponsored by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, U.S. Department of State, the Distinguished Fulbright Awards in Teaching program recognizes and encourages excellence in teaching in the U.S. and abroad. It is part of the overall Fulbright Program, named in honor of Senator William Fulbright, which promotes mutual understanding among people of the United States and other countries. The program sends highly accomplished primary and secondary teachers from the U.S. abroad and brings international teachers to the U.S for a three to six month long program.In 2009-10, the participating countries are: Argentina, Finland, India, Israel, Singapore, and South Africa. Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, Youth Programs Division, the scholarship initiative is designed to increase American citizens’ capacity to engage foreign governments and peoples through languages such as Arabic, Chinese, Farsi, Hindi, Korean, Russian, and Turkish—all languages that are becoming increasingly critical to know. USA Funds(R), the nation’s leading education loan guarantor, announces that it is accepting applications online for up to $1 million in scholarships to assist college students from lower-income households through its USA Funds Access to Education Scholarships(R) program.
The program offers $1,500 scholarships to qualified full-time or half-time undergraduates and to full-time graduate and professional degree students. Applicants for the scholarships must be enrolled or plan to enroll in coursework at accredited two- or four-year colleges, universities or vocational/technical schools beginning with the fall 2009 term through Feb. 1, 2010.
