Kroger will celebrate Black History Month in February with three contests awarding $30,000 in scholarships, laptop computers and family getaways. Working with the general theme “I Am Making History,” Kroger will conduct art, essay and poetry contests, with Jan. 30 the deadline for all submissions (entries must be received by this date).

Violins and tubas meet rollerblades and beat-boxing on From the Top at Carnegie Hall, the PBS series that features classical musicians ages 8 to 18. Now From the Top has teamed up with Orchestra Iowa (formerly known as the Cedar Rapids Symphony) to bring the joy and excitement of classical music to Iowa’s students and teachers in a year-long residency program funded by the US Department of Education. In partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme, the “Volvo Adventure” is an educational program that rewards environmental activities and the decision-makers of the future. Teams of students aged 13-16 perform environmental projects in their local communities. Projects are then submitted online, with the best entries presenting their ideas in Sweden to compete for the final prizes. There is also a companion program for 10-12 year olds. Submissions are due Jan. 31.

The Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage challenges students in grades 6 - 12 to combat acts of hatred, discrimination and intolerance by participating in the Stop the Hate: Youth Speak Out essay contest.
