If you are excited about science and have the skills and know-how to explain and demonstrate science at work in everyday life, you may have what it takes to win. 
At this very moment in laboratories around the world, scientists are hard at work developing new ways to keep us safe. Whether it’s bacteria and germs or UV rays and the wind, some dangers are invisible, making the innovations made by scientists in the areas of safety and security even more impressive and important.
For the 2010 Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge, each of the video topics focuses on the science of safety and security. Choose one and create a video that showcases what you know about these important areas of our everyday lives.

Here’s a fun and rewarding way to exercise your creativity as a teacher – and be recognized for it! The ASM Materials Education Foundation’s mission is to “excite young people in materials, science, and engineering careers”. Members of ASM International visit schools and frequently observe that students are fascinated by materials, but rarely have an opportunity to learn anything about them. To help teachers bring the “real world” of materials science into their classrooms, the ASM Materials Education Foundation is awarding 10 grants of $500 each to teachers, K-12. Read the rest…

IGES EARTH DAY PHOTO & ESSAY CONTEST (5-8)
Students in grades 5-8 are invited to be part of this unique national effort to capture our changing world. Take a photograph sometime from Monday, April 19 through Friday, April 30, 2010 (Earth Day itself is April 22) of something changing in your local environment: your backyard or neighborhood, near your school or in a local park, or off in the distance toward the horizon.
Students must also research and write an essay (400 words or less) that answers the following questions about the change taking place, its cause and impact and how it may look in the future. The first place winner receives a new digital camera!
